Kris Bosworth, Ph.D.
Technical Assistance Team Leader;
Kris BosworthKris Bosworth joined the College of Education to hold the Lester L. and Roberta D. Smith Endowed Chair in Education with a focus on the prevention of substance abuse and other factors that put young people at risk.  She holds a Professorship in the Educational Leadership Program.  She teaches courses in school climate, the administration of prevention programs and educational change.
Maryann Judkins, Ed.D.
Training and Technical Assistance Coordinator
Maryann JudkinsIn 2001, Maryann began working in the Tanque Verde School District as a substitute teacher and math teacher.  From 2003 to the present, she has worked as a trainer and training coordinator for two Safe Schools/Healthy Student grants and a Safe and Supportive Schools grant.  She has been involved in over 600 training opportunities for school personnel, as either the coordinator or facilitator.
When not working, Maryann spends time with her husband and 5-year-old son Caedan.  She is also working on her Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership.
Paul Brown,
S3 Coach
Paul BrownPaul worked in the Illinois school system for over 36 years, first teaching high school English, then becoming assistant principal in charge of the freshmen. He later became first principal at another campus, then Assistant Superintendent, and finally Deputy Superintendent, from which he retired in June, 2002.  Paul continued to work for the Illinois school system on a part-time basis until 2006.
From 1994 to 2006, Paul taught graduate courses in education administration at two local universities.  Additionally, from 2003 to 2006, Paul served as a curriculum, instruction and professional development consultant to Hales Franciscan High School in Chicago, a private, catholic high school.
Debi LaVergne,
S3 Coach
Debi LaVergneDebi LaVergne served as a police officer in the State of Arizona for eight years, graduating from the Arizona Law Enforcement Training Academy in 1992.
Debi has taught numerous Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement Technology, Counseling and Career Enhancement courses.
Debi is currently contracted with the University of Arizona, College of Education as a Senior Instructional Specialist, facilitating prevention programs in local high schools.
Barbara Wayne,
Student Leadership & BreakAway Trainer
Barb WayneBarbara Wayne retired in July 2002 after more than twenty-five years in Tucson Unified School District (TUSD).  She taught teenagers with emotional disabilities, and for the last fourteen years of her career had been both an assistant principal and a high school principal.  Barbara’s last position was as the principal of Palo Verde High Magnet School in Tucson, Arizona.
Ms. Wayne is committed to the BreakAway framework that is designed to change conditions in schools by giving young people a voice through youth-adult partnerships.  Her experience working with this model has been the most satisfying professional experience of her career.
Carla Cross,
S3 Coach
Carla Cross taught middle school students in Illinois for over twenty-six years. First as a special education teacher working with students with learning, behavioral, and emotional disabilities, she completed the last five years teaching language arts and technology courses. In 2010, she earned a master’s degree in educational psychology from the University of Illinois in the Curriculum, Technology, and Educational Reform (CTER) program. Carla is currently employed by the University of Arizona as a coach to area high schools for the Safe and Supportive Schools grant.

    Works to build the schools’ capacity to sustain their programs for the long term. Researches the process of implementing and sustaining prevention programs throughout this grant, to extend benefits to all Arizona schools. Provides training and technical assistance. Organizes ongoing professional development for participating schools. Coaches leadership teams and supports schools in program implementation.
    S3 Implementation Strategies

    Establish faculty-staff leadership teams to plan and guide their S3 AZ activities. Use parent/student/staff surveys, discipline records, attendance records, and other data to identify their most serious problems. Select evidence-based programs to address those problems. Implement their chosen programs with the support of coaches and trainers from the University of Arizona
